Brushing Matters!

why brushing matters!

This is probably the most basic, but most common question we get as a dentist. The options for toothbrushes are endless as well as the types of toothpastes. Should I use an electric or a manual plastic brush? Hopefully we can shed some light on that topic.

What type of brush should I use?

For most people I recommend a soft bristle tooth brush. Electric power tooth brushes will make the brushing experience easier for you, however, you can still do a good job with a standard soft brush.

What type of toothpaste should I use?

There are endless types of brands, types, flavors, and ingredients in toothpaste. We recommend any toothpaste that has fluoride in it. Fluoride is excellent for building tooth strength and fighting cavity-forming bacteria.

How should I brush and how often?

For adults, you should brush 2 minutes twice a day (morning and evening). Brush along the gumline with small, gentle circles, and brush each surface of the teeth (inside, outside, and top)

What about kids?

Any kid that has a tooth can brush! Typically, this will begin between 6 months to a year. For kids under 2 years old, a smear of fluoride toothpaste should be used to brush each tooth. For kids 2 years and up, a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste can be used. Kids should have parents brush and or supervising their brushing until they are able to tie their shoes or use a fork and knife. Typically this is around 6-7 years old.

What about flossing?

Flossing is as important as brushing! Two out of a tooth’s 5 surfaces are cleaned by flossing, so it is a crucial step for maintaining healthy teeth. All adults should floss, and kids should have their teeth flossed as soon as their teeth are touching (typically around 2).
